Paul Madden CMG was British ambassador to Japan (2017-21), Australia (2011-15) and Singapore (2007-11) and also served in Washington.
 
He is now a senior adviser to a number of multinational companies and consultancies, speaks and writes about Indo Pacific and Trade issues, and is a Visiting Professor of International Relations at Keio University Tokyo.
 
He is a Trustee of the UK/Japan 21st Century Group, the leading bilateral dialogue, and a senior advisor to the Japan Studies Centre at the University of East Anglia.
 
Paul lived in the Indo Pacific region for over 20 years in total and speaks fluent Japanese. During his posting in Tokyo, the UK signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan, its first post Brexit trade deal.
 
He has a Masters in Economic Geography from Cambridge, an MBA from Durham, studied Japanese at London University's School of Oriental and African Studies, and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
 

Paul has written books, plays and poetry. His latest book, Sankyu Japan, was published in 2022.
