Born in Madrid, Spain, Miguel Berger is an eminent German diplomat serving largely in Berlin. He has been German Ambassador to the United Kingdom since May 2022, having been received by Queen Elizabeth II to present his credentials in July of that year. He is a patron of the British-German Association.
Previously, he was Secretary of State at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin from 2020-2022. Miguel was responsible for two political departments as well as the coordination of German foreign policy in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region and was the Crisis Commissioner.
His illustrious career in the German diplomatic service has spanned many roles including representing his country in Bucharest, Mexico City, Ramallah, and New York, as well as being appointed to high office in the FFO in Berlin. Having studied economics at the University of Mannheim, he was deputy director at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and served as Chairman of the Budget and Administration Committee of the 67th United Nations General Assembly.
In 2013, Miguel became Commissioner for Global Issues and Foreign Energy and Climate Policy in Berlin, but changed departments in July 2014 and became Regional Commissioner for the Near and Middle East and Maghreb. He has also served as Director of the Department for Economic Affairs and Sustainable Development.
