His Excellency Koji Tsuruoka
Ambassador of Japan to the United Kingdom
His Excellency Mr Koji Tsuruoka was appointed by the Japanese Government as the new Ambassador of Japan to the United Kingdom in April 2016. Prior to this appointment, he was the Chief Negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Ambassador, Representative of the Government of Japan for the TPP (2013-2016).
H.E. Mr Tsuruoka graduated from the faculty of law at the University of Tokyo in 1976 and received his LLM from Harvard Law School in 1978.
Since 2002 he has been Professor of International Relations at the Graduate Institute of Policy Studies.
Previously, he was the Deputy Vice Minister for Foreign Policy, the Director-General at the International Legal Affairs Bureau, and the Director-General for Global Issues. He was Deputy Director General of the Bureau from 2003 to 2006.
H.E. Mr Tsuruoka has served in embassies in Moscow, Washington and Jakarta. He has also acted as Japan’s representative to many international conferences, including informal meetings held during the 59th session of the UN General Assembly on the World Summit Outcome Document of 2005.
