Daniel Finkelstein is a weekly columnist, leader writer and Associate Editor of The Times. Daniel was named Political Commentator of the Year at the Editorial Intelligence Comment Awards 2011 and 2012.
Daniel Finkelstein studied economics and politics at the London School of Economics. Between 1981 and 1990 he was a member of the SDP, and subsequently a close ally and adviser to David Owen, the SDP leader. When merger with the Liberal Party was proposed, Finkelstein was one of the leading opponents and was one of a group that moved to the Conservative Party. He later became Director of the think tank, Social Market Foundation, for three years. Between 1995 and 1997 he was Director of the Conservative Research Department and became one of the earliest advocates of the 'modernisation' of the Conservative Party, and was adviser to both Prime Minister John Major and Conservative leader William Hague.
Daniel Finkelstein was awarded the OBE in the 1997 honours list and appointed to the Lords in August 2013.
